1979年生まれ　滋賀県在住　1997年から『やまなみ工房』に所属 彼女の刺繍は「まる」で構成されている。布に円を描きおおよその数と配置を定めると、針を通し、出発地点から斜めに返る独特の縫い方で輪郭をかたどっていく。複数の「まる」は同時進行で進められるが、縫い込みの多さはそれぞれ異なり、一枚の中にも多様な表情を持つ「まる」が生まれる。何層にも円を描き縫い重ねるうち、力によって収縮され平面だった「まる」は山のように隆起し、立体感と重厚感のある作品に仕上がる。

born in 1979/ living in Shiga/ at YAMANAMi since 1997 Yumiko Kawai’s embroidered patterns consist of a lot of ‘circles’. After she decides the location, she begins to sew the circles, in her own style. Although she sews several pieces of cloth at a time, the fineness of the seams differs from one piece to another, and each one of them has its own charm. Because the pieces of cloth are embroidered so many times that they are tightly compressed, rise up, and eventually form some sort of mountain of fabric.
